Today the BC Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development announced that Wayne Willows is replacing Dave Maedel as BC’s Athletic Commissioner. Dave Maedel has accepted a position at the Ministry of Forest, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations.

Wayne Willows has been an accomplished public servant with 35 years of experience across multiple branches within the Justice Ministries. Wayne began his career with Adult Custody and Community Corrections. He has worked at both the Director and Executive Director level with Corrections and Courts Services, including the BC Sheriff Services. He has been responsible for both branches’ strategic planning and corporate programs and recently retired as the Executive Director for Court Services with operations oversight of Court Administration on Vancouver Island. Wayne holds many awards of distinction including the Corrections Meritorious Service Award for actions above and beyond the call of duty, the Federal Exemplary Service Award for outstanding and dedicated Leadership within Corrections, Ministerial Award for Leadership within the Ministry of Solicitor General, and Assistant Deputy Minister Court Services Branch Award for Exceptional Executive Leadership.
Wayne has a Bachelor of Arts degree (Psychology) from the University of Victoria. He had been working with the BC Athletic Commission as the Commissioner Representative at combat sport events and brings extensive experience with these sports. He has trained in and instructed martial arts and holds black belts in Hapkenbo and Kempo Kung Fu.
In his personal life, Wayne is married and has one daughter. He enjoys travel, physical training and he is an avid golfer.
