Rapid Extreme Weight Cuts are responsible for countless injuries and at least two deaths in mixed martial arts. The BC Athletic Commission has become the latest combative sports governing body to speak out about the dangers of these practices.
The BCAC worked with the University of Fraser Valley to undertake a scientific study for determination of both the short and long term health impacts of dehydration related to weight cutting practices. The study revealed loss of strength and cognitive function amongst other competitive disadvantages.
The BCAC released this video documenting the results of the study along with highlighting an example of a local fighter who almost died from kidney failure due to rapid extreme weight cut practices. This short video is worth reviewing for all involved in the combative sports community.
