Many jurisdictions require fighters to complete a pre bout medical questionnaire prior to competing in combat sports. Often these questionnaires are filled out under penalty of perjury. Nevada is one such jurisdiction.
Fighters often lie on these forms as injuries are rampant and disclosure could derail a bout and payday. Despite frequent lies there are rarely consequences. Today two rare precedents were handed out for such infractions. The Nevada Athletic Commission handed out two suspensions surrounding a non disclosed injury and sports betting based on inside knowledge of the injury.
Nolan King broke the story with the following tweets:
The context was Darrick Minner hid a pre existing injury prior to a bout in Nevada. His teammate Jeff Molina knew about this and failed to bring it to the Commission’s attention. More egregious he then placed a bet with this inside knowledge.
Minner was handed, in essence, a ‘time served’ suspension. Molina was handed a slightly longer suspension of 3 years which was also retroactive.
Nevada has previously come down far harder on less severe regulatory infractions such as the famous Nick Diaz marijuana suspension. Non disclosure, under penalty of perjury, and inside knowledge sports betting now have a precedent. 3 years.
