Alberta is a total outlier when it comes to combat sports regulation.
Throughout all of CAnada and the US combat sports are overseen by Provincial, State or Tribal commissions. Alberta, however, does not have a provincial commission and instead allows municipalities to oversee these sports.
In 2017 former UFC athlete Tim Hague died following a professional boxing bout in Edmonton. He suffered a series of knockout losses in various combat sports leading up to his fatal bout and serious questions were raised about the decision to licence him on the night of his fatal bout.
A provincial judge led an inquiry into the death of Hague. This week Justice Carrie Sharpe released her findings and made 14 recommendations for the better oversight of combat sports in Alberta. First and foremost Justice Sharpe said city commissions should be scrapped and a Province wide model should be used. Below are Justice Sharpe’s recommendations.
